Description
1950s or 1960s BSA REAR BRAKE DRUM with BEARING, DUMMY AXLE & NUT inVERY GOOD
condition.
Purported to have come from Bob Hansen's Race Team back in the late 50s or early 60s, extensively drilled for racing as you can see, "
BOB HANSEN RACE TEAM
" written in permanent marker around the bearing housing as shown, which is exactly how it came to me some years ago. Most likely an A65 rear drum originally, part number
68-6116
, I suppose it could also be a later pre-unit Gold Star finned rear drum
42-6018
artfully modified for bolt-on sprockets, but either way it is an interesting historical piece! The drilling was not done by an amateur for sure - precise measuring clearly, all of the smaller holes are counter-sunk front and back, removing quite a bit of metal... Even the inner end of the dummy axle has been drilled! That said, this brake drum is still a heavy lump of cast iron... Bearing spins smoothly, dummy axle good, chrome on nut not that great.
Who knows the provenance here, if it was in fact ever used on one of Bob Hansen's flat track racing Gold Stars???
All I can add is that the red-orange paint on this drum appears to be THE color of choice for his race bikes, as shown in the photo of one of his bikes currently in the Munganast Museum in St. Louis.
